Course info
This course combines theory and practice. It helps develop your knowledge and understanding of the biology of animals alongside an awareness of how to maintain the health, well-being and management of animals. It also gives you the practical skills needed to carry out duties in the care of animals.You will also gain skills related to the business side of animal care employment - customer service skills, record keeping and basic financial recording. In addition, you will develop your Core Skills (which are transferable into any work situation) like communication, numeracy and information technology.The course is based at Cumbernauld College, but some time is spent at Barony College near Dumfries on residential placements. This college has a purpose built small animal training unit and a working farm, in a rural setting. Here, you gain a lot fo the practical skills needed in working with animals.Students, who successfully complete the course, may progress on to the HNC in Animal Care at Barony College (or other Scottish colleges) or go into employment as assistants in kennels, catteries, stables or animal welfare organisations.
